Additional Notes:
- Rabbit:
- The MK1 Golf is still produced and sold in South Africa.
- Jetta:
- The Coupe model made up about 20% (max) of the total MK1 Jetta sales over the MK1 production line.
- Caddy / Pickup:
- Although the pickups were sold in 84 & 85, the production actually stopped in mid 1983. Production then moved to Yugoslavia later that year, and were churning out 1000 Caddy's (Re-named) per month until war broke out in 1991.
- The known production numbers for Europe from 1984 up to 1992 are an estimated 12,000 each year.
- In 1983, a total of around 7000 were sold in Germany. The first came in 1982 from Noth America as parts, and would be assembeld in Germany.
- There actually was never any US 1979, 1984, or 1985 model-year (MY) production. Only MY1980,81,82 & 83. But in some states/counties, MY1980's sold in late 1979 were titled/licensed as 1979's. Likewise with some left-over/carry-over MY1983's that weren't sold until until '84 and '85.
- US Westmoreland production stopped in mid-1983 (April/May?) and tooling was shipped to Yugoslavia, with first production there as MY1984.
- The Caddy is still produced in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
- Rabbit Convertible / Cabriolet:
- The car is built from the ground up as a convertible at the Karmann Coachworks factory in Osnabrück, Germany.
- Overall production would end up totaling over 388,500 cars.
- There actually was never any 1994 or 1995 model-year (MY) production of the MK1 Cabriolet (US or otherwise), even though VAG and VOA records a handful of them sold for 1994 and 1995. They were simply left over models sold in those years.
- Scirocco:
- While technically not a "MK1", the Scirocco 1 and 2 were both built on the A1 chassis, and are generally considered to be part of the MK1 group, for the most part, since they share many of the same mechanical aspects as the other MK1 models.
