1977 - 1978 Champagne Edition I and II

Options and details

1977 Rabbit - Champagne Edition I The Champagne Edition was a sales campaign that Volkswagen did in 1977 and 1978. The first special sales campaign was to commemorate the production of the one-millionth VW Rabbit. The 1978 models are referred to as Champagne Edition II. Both models included special colors and accessories, and included other Volkswagen models in the line up.

  • Metallic paint in Inari Silver or Bronze Metallic
  • 1.6 fuel injected 8v 4-speed transmission
  • Optional 3-speed automatic
  • Quarts clock
  • Padded kneebar
  • Padded steering wheel
  • Luxurious crushed velour seats
  • Adjustable seats w/ adjustabe headrests
  • Carpeted rear parcal shelf
  • Bright window trim
  • Chrome bumpers and body trim
  • 4.5x14 2-tone wheels w/ chrome center caps
  • Optional sunroof

  • 1978 Rabbit elegance — Champagne Edition II style.

This is a dream come true! It sparkles like no Rabbit before. But look beyond the exclusive Inarisilver Metallic (or Taupe Metallic) body color. Appreciate the extra wide, 175/70 SR13 steel-belted whitewall tires and full wheel-covers.

    Look inside.

Here is an interior that is unmatched in its class. Totally color-coordinated from the steering wheel to the glove compartment door. The seats are finished in crushed velour. There is deep cut-pile carpeting on the floor, on the trunk cover, on the bottom of door panels. From the dashboard to the headliner... the Rabbit Champagne Edition II interior reflects quality and elegance.

    But there's more.

Important touches missing in many other cars today — operating front door vent windows, a left side remote controlled outside rear-view mirror, quartz-crystal chronometer. And there is room. Significantly more room inside than cars like Datsun B210, Ford Pinto, and Mustang II, Plymouth Arrow, and Dodge Challenger. More trunk room than BMW 530i, Buick Skyhawk, Chevrolet Camaro, Datsun 519, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Celica, and 30 other cars listed in the official EPA guide for 1978.

While there are already a great many Rabbits on American roads — few can approach the touches of elegance these special Champagne Edition II models radiate. Put a touch of class into your life. See the Champagne Edition II cars now at your VW dealer's showroom.

Here is a seat that feels as good as it looks. (And even if it weren't trimmed this elegantly — it would still be impressively comfortable!) Come sit in one soon at your VW dealer's. Take it for a ride. You'll see why so many people like to take their Rabbits on long cross=country trips. Front seat backs recline, of course.

And, since we began building these Champagne Edition II Rabbits using top-of-the-line specifications — you get something that no other car, foreign or domestic, can offer you - seat belts that "put themselves on" as you slip into the driver and passenger seats. This passive restraint system has been installed on over 100,000 Rabbits in the US already. They're a simple and workable alternative to airbags.

With the introduction of the 1984 models, passive systems will be mandatory. Volkswagen Rabbits have offered them since 1975. That's advanced engineering leadership!

    Special Champagne Edition II Equipment:

    • Begin with all Rabbit "L" standard equipment, then add:
    • Special exterior color (Taupe Metallic or Inarisilver Metallic)
    • Color-coordinated pinstripe
    • Steel-belted radial tires with white walls (175/70 SR13)
    • Deluxe wheel covers
    • Crushed velour interior (Turmaline or Aubergine)
    • Color-coordinated foam-padded steering wheel
    • Color-coordinated carpeting on floor, trunk cover, door panels, and shifter knob
    • Color-coordinated steering column and headliner

This special Aubergine interior comes with Champagne Edition II Rabbits with Taupe Metallic body color. (Shown in pic.) Rabbits with Inarisilver Metallic exterior offer a richly-colored Turmaline interior.

Both interiors are offered on either 2-door or 4-door Rabbit Champagne II models.
