Troubleshooting Your Automatic Transmission

Troubleshooting / Parts Wear Comparison

Brake Bands

	Part	First and reverse gear brake band
	Wear	Brake band lining chipped. Groove in band not visible.
	Solution	Replace brake band.

	Part	Second gear brake band
	Wear	Brake band lining chipped.
	Solution	Replace brake band.

	Part	Second gear brake band
	Wear	Friction surface must be coarse, not glazed. Black coloring is okay if groove is visible.
	Solution	Reuse brake band.

Forward clutch drum/Piston for direct and reverse clutch

	Part	Forward clutch drum
	Wear	Radial grooves in clutch housing.
	Solution	Reuse clutch housing. Replace clutch discs and hub.

	Part	Forward clutch drum
	Wear	Reverse side of forward clutch shows wear due to defective direct and reverse clutch.
	Solution	Reuse forward clutch.

	Part	Piston for direct and reverse clutch
	Wear	Piston is warped due to heat.
	Solution	Replace piston.

	Part	Piston for direct and reverse clutch
	Wear	Contact area for clutch disc is smooth.
	Solution	Reuse piston.

Direct and reverse clutch

	Part	Hub of direct and reverse clutch drum
	Wear	Hub is step worn (arrow).
	Solution	Replace clutch drum.

	Part	Hub of direct and reverse clutch drum
	Wear	Hub shows wear, but still smooth.
	Solution	Reuse clutch drum.

	Part	Outer surface of direct and reverse clutch drum
	Wear	Radial grooves (area of second gear brake band).
	Solution	Replace direct and reverse clutch drum.

	Part	Outer surface of direct and reverse clutch drum
	Wear	Drum discolored but smooth.
	Solution	Reuse clutch drum.

Clutch drum direct and reverse clutch

	Part	Thrust surface, hub of clutch drum
	Wear	Radial grooves (area of thrust washer).
	Solution	Replace direct and reverse clutch drum.

	Part	Thrust surface, hub of clutch drum
	Wear	Thrust surface shows wear but is still smooth.
	Solution	Reuse clutch drum.

	Part	Bushing, direct and reverse clutch
	Wear	Radial grooves around bushing.
	Solution	Replace bushing.

	Part	Bushing, direct and reverse clutch
	Wear	Bushing shows wear but is still smooth.
	Solution	Reuse bushing.
