Installing an early distributor in a 2.0 block

2.0 distributor adapter ring
Volkswagen's 2 liter block uses a larger distributor gear on the intermediate shaft, and therefore has a larger opening in the block, where the distributor goes.
To install a 2.0 block using your Mk1's current head and injection system, you'll need the 2.0 gear, and an adapter ring in order to use your distributor ring in the 2.0 block.

UPDATE: It seems I've been going about this all wrong.
According to Ron, of www.the152.com here's the more affordable route:
"The cheapo way, with junkyard parts, use the original ABA distributor complete, swap in a shutter wheel from a DigiFant I or II distributor and call it good."

If you wish to go about this swap differently, or these parts aren't available to you, read on:

To do this, you'll need to buy, or remove the gear from the 2.0 distributor, and install it on your distributor. Don't forget to slide the adapter on first, as the gear is larger than the adapter ring.

There are two ways to get an adapter ring.
If you have access to a machine shop, here's a picture with measurements of a ring someone made themselves. Don't forget to include a recessed area around the outside for the rubber O-ring to sit in.
