Installing and Adjusting Timing Belts
for 8v engines

Installing and adjusting a cam belt is pretty simple.  Anyone that can follow directions and has a metric socket set can do this.  It also helps if you have a Bentley manual for help as these are not complete instructions...

  1. After removing cam belt covers, rotate the crank shaft sprocket by hand until you have the timing marks aligned.  It helps to use a box wrench for this. Check that all timing marks are lined up.

  2. Remove the old belt tensioner and remove old belt.  Make sure Cam and Crank are still aligned and loosely install the new tensioner and belt.

  3. Making sure everything still is lined up, make sure the belt is installed in the sprocket teeth tightly.  Flip the tensioner clockwise and lock it into position with the lock nut.  Check belt tension.  You should be able to twist the other side of the belt about 90 degrees with your fingers

  4. Torque the tensioner to about 33 lbs.  Turn the crank 2 full turns and check the tension again and the timing marks again.

  5. Repeat until lined up if needed.

  6. Replace cover
